Cam to cam chat safety: a practical checklist

Cam to cam chat with strangers should be fun, not risky. Run through this checklist once and it becomes second nature.

Quick answer

Use a first name only, check your background, keep chats and payments on the platform, never send money or personal details to someone you met on camera, and leave, report and block the moment anything feels off. If someone threatens to share a recording, stop replying, do not pay, keep evidence and report it.

Before you turn the camera on

  • Pick a nickname. Your first name is fine; your surname, employer and city are not needed.
  • Scan the room. Mail, ID cards, family photos, a window with a recognisable view — move them out of shot.
  • Check your profile. Does your profile photo or bio give away more than you intended?
  • Use headphones so housemates or family do not become part of the conversation.
  • Know the controls. Find mute, camera off, report and hang up before you need them.

Never share, whoever is asking

  • Passwords, verification codes or login links
  • Card numbers, bank details or screenshots of payment apps
  • Home address, workplace or daily routine
  • Identity documents of any kind
  • Anything on camera you would not want to see again later

Spotting scams

Most people you meet on camera are exactly who they seem. Scammers rely on you not knowing the patterns, so here they are:

The platform switch

“Let’s move to another app, it’s cheaper/more private.” Off-platform, there are no report tools and no protection.

The emergency

A sudden need for money — travel, a sick relative, a blocked account. Real connections do not start with requests for cash.

The fake verification

A link to “verify your age” or “unlock features” that asks for card details. Real purchases only happen on the in-app payment page.

The threat

A claim to have recorded you, plus a demand for payment. This is sextortion — see below.

If someone threatens you

Sextortion is when someone threatens to share images or video of you unless you pay. It is a crime, it is not your fault, and paying almost never makes it stop. If it happens:

  1. Stop replying. Do not negotiate and do not pay.
  2. Keep evidence: screenshots of messages, usernames and times.
  3. Report and block the account on the platform.
  4. Contact local police. Many countries also have dedicated online-safety helplines.

During the call

Trust your instincts. You can end any call at any moment without explanation — on FlirtCam, one tap hangs up and stops billing. You can also turn your camera off and keep talking, or switch to voice or text matching if you would rather not be on video at all.

Respect works both ways: do not record or screenshot the other person without clear consent, and accept a “no” the first time.
